To Protect Our Borders, Or Not?

July 20th, 2007 · 5 Comments ·   ·

Note: A persistent computer glitch has kept me from posting lately. After several and various attempted fixes, it became clear that my old system was on its last legs. Quite frankly, I could have and would have continued posting if an urgent matter had presented itself, but the nature of the system failure I was experiencing prevented me from having more than one or two applications running simultaneously. To avoid hassles and headaches I decided to just stick to doing things that resulted in billable hours. Today, a new day has dawned; my new computer is now fully functional. Patrick Cleburne noted my absence over at VDare and attributed it to a lingering case of exhaustion from our recent legislative immigration battles. I cannot say that he is wrong… in a sense, I welcomed not being able to post. Perhaps I needed some additional time to recharge and reflect.

In today’s e-mail, I was forwarded a link to an article that I think is a good reentry point for my blogging:

The Claremont Institute - Making Americans

It is our common belief in the self-evident truths of the Declaration—the laws of nature and of nature’s God—that makes us one people. Because these truths no longer guide our civic institutions, turning workers already here into true citizens is today an enormous task. What, then, of the tens of millions more who will come in over the next two decades through temporary work permits and politically inevitable family reunification?

We must hope that America is equal to the challenge. And we will continue to do our part to fight, as Lincoln did, for the principles on which America is founded. But let us realize that the stranglehold of multiculturalism on our elites and the mere fact that we are debating whether to defend our southern border does not bode well for the American experiment in liberty.

What a great point! It speaks to something that has gotten under my skin while our “leaders” have been fiddling about, flailing at and obfuscating around some essential American truths wrapped up in their debate over “comprehensive immigration reform.” In any sane and rational discussion of an issue that pertains to national sovereignty, the last thing that should ever be up for debate is whether or not we are going to protect our borders.

I belong to my subdivision’s Neighborhood Watch program. If we went about protecting our neighborhood in the manner in which the Senate and our other feckless leaders have approached immigration reform, we’d have to start each meeting with a discussion about whether or not it is wise for us to put doors in all of our door jams in order to curtail the number of break-ins we are seeing in the neighborhood. Once we settled that, we’d have heated debates about the virtues of doorknobs and locks. There would be a contingent in the neighborhood insisting that the mere presence of police on patrol represents “subdivision-ist profiling.” Surely, there would be a splinter group calling itself the “Subdivisional Council for the Un-Homed” demanding representation at our homeowners association meetings for squatters who take up residence in vacant homes within our platted boundaries.

Yes, dear readers, many of our leaders have sunk to that level of absurdity in the way they routinely think about immigration. It is time for us to send most of them home. It’s going to take a whole fresh crop, planted after clearcutting and delousing, for us to make sure that what rises in its place is free from the infestations that plague the dirt inside the Beltway. And in my mind, the first dirtbag Senator that has to go is Mel Martinez.

    Hey KD,

I heard Lindsey Graham on the radio talking about how “complicated” the immigration issue is and therefore how any solution has to be “comprehensive.” What is it about these people that they insist on making everything a game of earning favors? Can’t they just secure the border, then tackle the really “complicated” aspects of immigration reform after that?

Or maybe we just get smarter people to be our representatives?

Well at least your bigots at the embassies are doing their job. My wife was barred from coming there based on their perceptions of Filipinos. So I moved here where I and my family are welcome. Been here for almost four years and never felt better. Better family values here as well. Actually there are thousands of us, many retired US military, that are tired of the US and its lack of values and backward foreign policy.

    Jim,

    Glad you’re there.

    AZ,

I didn’t know how to respond to that guy. It’s almost impossible to figure out what he’s rambling about. I did have a thought about how one man’s “family values” might be another man’s “incest” or “prostituting his children,” but you nailed the bottom line on this: We’re better off that he is there.

Please believe me when I say I really do wish the guy and his family all the best. My frustration toward the illegal immigration invasion and my government’s complacency in addressing it has on occasion made me ponder what a life in Australia would be like for my family. However, I’M NOT AUSTRALIAN! I’M AN AMERICAN! I am the result of 9 generations of American ancestors before me. While often times it would appear as though my country has given up on my family, and me, I refuse to give up on it. My ancestry, my culture and my country are worth fighting for.

P.S. I see you’ve found Phxnews.com. Todd is a great guy. I’ve met him on several occasions through my membership in RidersUSA. He and his wife are top notch. Beware of some of the people in the forum that are without a life and literally spend all day arguing both sides of ANY issue. Dickens and Salty come to mind in that regard. You may indeed find a few liberals who are worthy of good debate. It is a great site and Todd does some excellent podcasts with impressive guests.
