Education In America

Public schools were originally established, in large part, to impart Judeo-Christian, Protestant values to America's children. Of late, our schools have strayed deep into dangerous moral territory. While suspicious and concerned, I was not aware how insidious the majority of our "educators" and schools have truly become until recently.

When I learned that I was about to become a first-time father, curiosity led me to attend some of our local school board meetings. I wanted to see for myself whether or not the folly of which I had been told was accurate. Even with lowered expectations, I was unprepared for what unfolded before my eyes! I now know for certain that our schools have leapt far beyond the simple acceptance of moral relativism. Today, I am certain that many of the school systems in America have sanctioned lesson plans for the intentional, systematic classroom inculcation of immorality in our children.

At one meeting, I listened to so-called "experts" as they spoke out in favor of our school system entering into a contract (that was accepted and signed) with a group called GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Educational Network). Despite their protestations to the contrary, this group's mission is to force a "don't knock it until you've tried it" acceptance of "alternative lifestyles" in our children...even in the early grades. Their "work" is done under the guise of preventing bullying in our schools. There is ample evidence that GLSEN's stated mission is a ruse and any reasonable person knows that we have had strict rules against bullying in our schools for a long time. If the rules are not being enforced, we certainly should not be turning to fringe groups with gay agendas to "set us straight."

In Massachusetts, under an agreement similar to that which my school board signed, teachers and "volunteers" trained by GLSEN were captured on tape giving explicit instructions to pre-teen children about how to perform dangerous sex acts. The fact that the school board approved this contract not only outraged me, it made me fearful of what other boneheaded decisions our bureaucrats would convince the school board to make in the future.

It takes very little research to learn the facts: public educators have abandoned any discussion of the morality necessary to support the maintenance of our culture and propagation of our civic values. Public schools are the intellectual equivalent of a mosh-pits. A little bit more study of the state of affairs in our schools convinced me that American parents must rise up and reclaim control of their children's education...and soon. The current system cannot be restored fast enough; certainly it will remain irreparable until my first child has completed many years of school, so my wife and I will have to provide — even create — alternatives for her. Even private schools are a hit and miss proposition ; there are not enough morally strong teachers because there are virtually zero morally strong colleges of education.

Beyond morality in education, there are other issues of concern. We simply must stop spending the billions of dollars that our local schools are, by judicial fiat, mandated to waste on attempts to remedy the deficiencies of both legal immigrant and illegal alien children. When one considers the inevitable negative impact on quality classroom experiences that occur as teachers are handed the task of "mainstreaming" large numbers of un-teachable kids, is it not reasonable to expect that even our best teachers will get stuck in a never ending chase to impart knowledge to an ever worsening "lowest common denominator?" If American parents do not take a stand, our schools will forego opportunities to impart morality, abdicate their responsibility to pass along heritage and they will bury our culture in a sea of insidious lies about diversity and multiculturalism.

If you've read other parts of this web site, you're likely already aware that I had wanted to get away from the third world influence that was invading my own neighborhood for quite some time. I had not acted — but I did watch all of my closest friends leave town as they got married and had children approaching school age. In similar fashion, the issue of my child's education was the final straw that spurred my wife and I to make a five-year plan to evacuate. Thank God it didn't take nearly that long for us to get out. We no longer live in my hometown. We are refugees. Thank God we found a new home in a place that, so far, appears to be an American city.

Please forgive the pessimism. I do believe we can and will make change, but I'm not willing to pull any punches. I'm trying to spur some action here! With that in mind, here is my ever-growing list of people and groups that I think will be the ones who will truly "save the children" of America. If you've got kids, or care about kids, and care about traditional American values, I'm sure you'll find some good reading at these sites. So, don't just sit there...go irritate your school board members by asking hard questions. You'll be glad you did!

Accuracy In Academia

"Accuracy In Academia, a nonprofit public service organization based in Washington, D.C., seeks the reassertion of traditional academic ethics in our universities. We contend that academic freedom is threatened by a progressive ideological orthodoxy, pervasive in the intellectual community, which degrades professional standards in teaching and scholarship, and inhibits speech and research which contradict orthodox views."

Alliance for Separation of School & State

"It may be a jarring statement, but for more than three full lifetimes — the 220 years from the 1620s to the 1840s — most American schooling was independent of government control, subsidy, and influence. From this educational freedom the American Republic was born. Now, after 150 years of tax-financed schooling, we see more and more children failing to grow into responsible, caring, competent adults. A movement is growing to reclaim the American tradition of family responsibility in education by returning to the separation of school and state."

American Association of Educators

"Our stated purpose is to encourage and empower teachers who embrace similar views on education in America--especially those who subscribe to the idea that education should aim to improve a young person's character as well as his or her intellect."

Americans for Higher Education Reform

"Americans for Higher Education Reform is an Illinois not-for-profit organization. We distribute and make available information regarding both immigration and higher education. We inform the American public about the state of our higher education system and the effect that massive immigration rates have had. The formation of Americans for Higher Education Reform was inspired by graduate students and professional engineers who are dismayed by their future career prospects. They feel that they have squandered both their money and their time in the pursuit of advanced degrees in technical fields. They have worked hard, yet - our own government has failed them miserably."

Children First America

"To promote parental choice in education through private tuition grants and tax funded options, giving all families the power to choose the K - 12 school that best fulfills the hopes and dreams they have for their children."

Education Policy Institute

"Public education in the United States does not fulfill either the educational or social needs of children. Its deficiencies have serious negative consequences in our political system, our economy, and within our social and cultural affairs. Accordingly, EPI seeks to improve education through research, policy analysis, and the development of responsible alternatives to existing policies and practices. In these activities, EPI strives to promote greater parental choice in education, a competitive education industry, and other policies that address the problems of both public and private schools."

Foundation for American Christian Education

"Publishes classical education curriculum and resources based on the Principle Approach® for Christian schools, home school parents, and Christians in general."

Foundation for Individual Rights in Education

Intercollegiate Studies Institute

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute works to instill an understanding and appreciation for America’s founding principles. These six values represent the core beliefs inherent in ISI’s mission and its activity.

Limited Government
The rightful functions of government are to guarantee individual liberty, private property, internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice. When the state exceeds this proper role, it accumulates power and becomes a threat to personal liberty.

Individual Liberty
Individuals possess rights to life, liberty, property, and freedom from the restrictions of arbitrary force. They exercise these rights through the use of their natural free will.

Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility is central to the idea of a free society and to the concept of self-government. Because each individual is morally responsible for his acts, citizens in a free society have an obligation to educate themselves to further the common good through the political process: this is the proper and necessary function of self-government.

The Rule of Law
Laws, not men, rule a free society. The Constitution of the United States, with its division of powers, is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government while preventing the concentration of power.

Free Market Economy
Allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of a free society, and also the most productive and efficient supplier of human needs.

Moral Norms
The values, customs, conventions, and norms of the Judeo-Christian tradition inform and guide a free society. Without such ordinances, society induces its decay by embracing a relativism that rejects an objective moral order.

The Teaching Commission

"The Teaching Commission is dedicated to dramatically improving student achievement by ensuring that all our public schools have a world-class teaching corps that will be held in high esteem across America."

I'm not yet sure this should be here, but from an initial read, it seems prudent to give these folks a chance. They've got a lot of selling to do before I'll buy in. I like some of the board members, but others concern me that the end result will resemble something that the United Nations might produce...which would be in opposition to the best interests of the future of the United States of America. Time will tell.

Yorktown University

"The Spirit of '76 is the spirit of rebellion against arbitrary power. It motivated the Founding generation of Americans, and endures to this day. Yorktown University is privileged to carry the name of one of the most important battles that occurred during that Rebellion. Our crest bears the image of the Goddess of Victory that sits atop the monument that memorializes their deeds at Yorktown, Virginia in 1781. And, we offer courses that teach our students about our philosophy of limited government, and the Spirit of '76. The philosophy of limited government of the Founders shapes the political institutions through which the political life of the American people flows, and by which differences in the United States are resolved."
